To aid development of this forum, I'd like to know what people think are the essential features a forum should have and what other features are important. I can then build up some kind of list to work through to add various features. For example, if enough people think sub forums are a good thing, then I can include it as a feature.

Obviously, features like user profiles, editing posts and basic things like that don't need to be mentioned.

As an example, I'll start off with what I think is important:

"Subscribe to this thread" option
RSS feeds
Security
Quick, easy and yet robot-proof registration
bbCode with simple text editor
Search function

Things that other forum systems have that I don't think are necessary:

Friends system
Complicated registration
Who's viewing a specific thread (vBulletin)
Thread ratings

Hmm... I would suggest a private messaging system. It would take hardly no time at all to construct and it would make MonoForum more interactive.

Lastly, I'm mentioning user profiles! They need to be completed! Lmao. A complete necessity.

Yeah, I think private messaging is pretty essential, so I'll make that a priority! But of course user profiles will be completed first :p

Not sure how I'd go about giving those out! Any idea?

Hi Miles,

I just stumbled across this topic. Is this forum soft done by you? Looks great. My humble suggestion is: make it A REAL ALTERNATIVE to phpBB. Don't try to compete with phpBB! Is it flat files based? If so, great! Keep it lighweight - just the most needed. Do you give it for testing? If so, it will be a pleasure for me to have a detailed look at it and give you my feedback ... :-)
Cheers

Thanks for your comments Martin. Yes, it's mine, although very much a work-in-progress which I don't get to work on very much!

I do like its simplicity over alternatives and would definitely like to keep it that way. It isn't flat files based because it would probably be too slow if it got a lot of traffic but it is lightweight. I concentrate on code efficiency and core functionality. A forum is for discussion, not for trying to filter out features you don't need/want and having to wait longer for pages to load because of it! I'm sure you must find it fast in using it!

I'm sorry I don't have plans to give it for testing just yet, but maybe when the finished set of features is finished -- not many more to go now.
